Have I got time to watch a film?

I decided to re-watch The Clone Wars movie today. I have just put the first coat of paint on a new ceiling and I am waiting for it to dry before I crack on with the second coat. You have to love domestic bliss. I, personally, can do without it today. On the plus side, I can go for a pint this afternoon, guilt free as I have put in a good shift this morning.

The movie received a cinematic release ahead of the series. It's not bad, not brilliant, but not bad. I have seen a lot worse. At the point the movie starts, The Clone Wars is in full swing. Count Dooku has taken control of the Hyperspace lanes the Republic needs to gain access to the mass part of their arm of Clones. The Jedi are spread thin as they try to keep up with Separatists. The story starts with the kidnap of Jabba The Hutt's son, Rotta, orchestrated by Dooku and the Jedi's attempt to rescue the little slug. It's not earth shattering, as you can see. The animation isn't bad. This was originally supposed to the 4 episode opening arc of the series, but they were stitched together to form this movie. Now, I have a few issues with it...that may not surprise you.

I hate Yoda's speech pattern in the prequels and The Clone Wars. In his first appearance in The Empire Strikes Back, he doesn't constant speech in this backwards fashion. Go check! He does actually have a normally speech pattern. He strings together some coherent sentences. The Prequel Trilogy and The Clone Wars have him damn near constantly talk this backwards bollocks.

I am not overall a fan of the nicknames Anakin and Ahsoka give each other. Ahsoka? Who is that? She is Anakin's Padawan learner. At this stage of the game, he has passed the Jedi Trials and been honoured with a knighthood. While he is still sent on missions with Obi-Wan Kenobi, he has now come of age to receive his own student. At first she is supremely annoying, but eventually she will become one of the best things about The Clone Wars. She's calls him Sky-Guy and he calls her Snips. I just don't like it.

The rest of the film is quite good. There are some really good set pieces involving the droids and clones battling it out. The clone armour is worn and dirty. It shows they have been in battle and everything is not all shiny and new like it was in The Prequel trilogy. There are also some weird and wonderful new species thrown into the mix as well as voice overs from Samuel L. Jackson (who appears to be phoning it) as Mace Windu and Christopher Lee as Count Dooku. The other voices are not bad and there are some good impersonations of the main characters.

I am holding off on my impressions on the book until I have at least 5 chapters under my belt. I am not far off, so keep your eyes peeled for an update early this week.

  1. A lot of people have said the Clone Wars TV series is one of the best things out there; never found the time to watch it (damn you Netflix Marvel etc), might have to convince me daughter to binge watch it.

  2. It is good, but it does have some stumbles. It is worth a watch. It starts off aimed at kids and gets dark in places.
