The Phantom Menace...over view

What the fuck is a midi-chlorian? Yes, that's right the all mystical Force reduced to a disease.

Right, that is off my chest. I have finished The Phantom Menace and, boy, was it a struggle. I am going to stress at this point, it is not Terry Brooks fault. As an author, he did his best. He's working from a script and, sadly, a bloody boring one. It was a hard thing to get through without comparing to the equally boring film. The problem with novelisations is they are based on a script and not necessarily the one that ends up on the big screen in front of you. The only visuals they have are a head shot of the actor, if the part has been cast, and early designs of props, costumes and sets. All of which are subject to change. Brooks does the best he can, but the story is just not gripping enough.

George Lucas said he wrote the film for children, but I don't know one child that gets they thrills from trade negotiations or elections. Blimey, I have an active interest in politics but I don't sit and watch Prime Minister's Question Time for 2 hours straight. Oh, the actions sequences are there, however, they are meant to be seen. They aren't meant to read in prose. It doesn't do them justice.

The story takes a while to get going, if you can say it does at all. It is bland at best, with the only character to shine through being Palpatine. What a nice guy he is *winky face*. He is dripping his poison into ears from the start and setting up everything that is to come.

I first read this book 19 years ago. I read it before, I saw the film. I think I started this book wearing rose tinted glasses. Back then, it was the first official Star Wars in 16 years. There was a lot of expectation. Sadly, it was not met. It hasn't put me off my mission though. It's straight into Episode II: Attack of the Clones by R. A. Salvatore.
